Sue Sewell recently attended the 2011 meeting of the American Society of Hand Therapists in Nashville Tennessee.
This meeting provided the US launch of a product, already available in NZ, to assist pain relief in osteoarthritis of the basal joint of the thumb. Sue was able to confirm our findings at Merivale Hand Clinic, that this splint can relieve pain and assist function for patients with this condition. See the photo below.

A New Zealand Hand Therapist from Auckland presented a research paper which was very well received by attendees and the International “expert” panel and will help pave the way to assist rehabilitation of De Quervain’s Tendonosis.
Presentations and discussions throughout the conference suggested that rehabilitation of wrist conditions remains the ongoing area of focus for concern and research of Hand Surgeons and Therapists alike. Although both these groups acknowledge we do not yet have all the answers, recent publications suggest that Hand Therapists are well placed to offer the most up to date rehabilitation techniques.
