New North Canterbury Hand Assessment Service

Mr Ram Chandru (Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Limb Surgeon) in conjunction with the Merivale and Kaiapoi Hand Clinics is excited to announce a new combined hand assessment service for people living in the North Canterbury region.

The new service located within the Pegasus Medical Centre in the Pegasus Township is held fortnightly on a Tuesday morning and allows GP’s to directly refer patients to Mr Chandru for an assessment and diagnosis of any hand, wrist and elbow conditions. The service is run with the assistance of a registered hand therapist from the Kaiapoi Hand Clinic who attends  the clinic and provides assistance withany splinting the patient may require in conjunction with education and exercise prescription asrequired.

The service which was established in January 2017 has already proved a popular addition to other specialist services available at the Pegasus Medical Centre and allows those living in North Canterbury to get specialist assessment andtreatment closer to home.Prior to offering this service north of the city, Mr Chandru and the Kaiapoi Hand Clinic have worked together for the past 3 years. This team approach has seen patients from North Canterbury receiving assessment, diagnosis, treatment (including surgery where indicated) and rehabilitation for a wide range of injury and non-injury related conditions.

The hand therapist working alongside Mr Chandru will commonly see patients for follow up visits at the Kaiapoi Hand Clinic located in the Countdown carpark in Hilton Street Kaiapoi. The Kaiapoi Hand Clinic has recently undergone a refurbishment and expansion of space to cope with the increasing demand for services and is staffed by four registered hand therapists. GP’s can refer to and patients can also directly attend the Kaiapoi Hand Clinic by phoning (03) 3559775 or by visiting the clinic to make an appointment with a hand therapist.

Referrals from GPs to see Mr Chandru at the Pegasus Medical Centre can be made by calling his secretary Jo for an appointment on 03 968 3428.
